Effervescente al Limone

Is it strange that enjoy ENO, just like my mom does?? I hadn't had it in a while, but on Christmas eve, when my dinner got the best of me, I indulged in something that wasn't quite ENO, but a similar Italian version, Brioschi, lemon flavored, it was yummy, and did the trick.....I went to buy some today at Bosa Foods, the bottle was not at all appealing, I liked the look of this one better! And am happy to report, it works just the same!!

This jar was $3.99, 2 teaspoons of the pellets in a glass of water does the trick! Drink while its fizzing, takes care of your tummy pains.

Something nice to have in your medicine cabinet, and its nice looking too!

I bought a Hyacinth...

I poked around the floral department at Safeway the other night (even though Fredo was waiting in the car and told me to hurry) and I landed upon a sea of Hyacinths...none of them had bloomed, but I could smell Spring like it was right there in front of me!

I chose one randomly and headed to the till with my groceries for Smoked Salmon Farfalle...that nights dinner (yummy). I was excited to bring it home, the smell to me, is heavenly...like watching The Secret Garden during winter time, I get excited to watch life bloom in the upcoming coming months.

My new hyacinth fit nicely in my milk glass vase, nestled beside my paperwhites, planted in the other...yesterday, it started to bloom, it was a perfect day, the sun was even shining in the windows....Spring is coming, it will be here faster than you think! It has already come to my house!

A spot of tea?

I hosted a tea party last year for some close girlfriends.....we used fancy tea cups, I rented a samovar and I baked little scones and made bite sized sandwiches. It was lovely. But probably the most lovely thing of all was the tea my sister brought. All the boxes and bags of tea I have in my cupboard amount to nothing compared to the taste of this tea.......

My first package of Creamy Earl Grey Tea

Creamy Earl Grey by The Secret Garden Tea Company.....to die for! Bergamot and Vanilla! If you love traditional Earl Grey, then you will swoon over this tea. A must have in your pantry.

Everyone got to take home a little silver teapot spoon!

The Samovar, it made the party!

Megan and Deanna sipping tea!

Thank you Mirella for letting me borrow your sequined dress!

We all wore pretty dresses, and sipped tea. It was a lovely afternoon!

Something Lovely...

I spritzed myself with something lovely tonight, and a whole bunch of memories came flooding back to me...Sugar Lemon perfume by Fresh. I reminded me of my sister, back in the day when she worked at BeautyMark when it first opened in Yaletown, and me, working at Curious, a little giftware store, that is no longer.....I forgot just how yummy it smells, a special treat, to which I just might treat myself with this week!

Tis' the season to be pooped....

Its boxing day, Christmas is over.......just like that, done! Now comes the excitement of using my new Moleskin day planner! Pardon my absence, there has been a lot going on.....

It has been a BUSY December, parties, birthdays, dinners, brunches, presents, baking....and kids. We are all pooped, but have kept up very well! I have tried my best to keep the kids on their schedules so no one is cranky...Noah has learned to fall asleep on his own, the best Christmas present ever!!!! And Anabelle devoured Christmas dinner, gravy and all!

In a few days it will be New Years Eve, which always makes me sad...I am excited to start a new year, a new chapter, but there is something aching about leaving a year behind....that song "Auld Lang Syne" (I had no idea that was the name!?) makes me well with tears....especially in the Sex and the City Movie, when Carrie is rushing over to be with Miranda....just the tune tugs on my heart strings...I learned it means "times gone by".....

Enjoy the last few days of December, have a Happy and Safe New Years Eve! I look forward to writing many new blogs for 2011!!

A Little Gem

I love breakfast....and lunch, and dinner....I love food, I am sure I have told you that before! I can't tell you how many times we go to this little place in our neighbourhood...it is so yummy, and friendly, Chez Meme Baguette Bistro, is loved by all in our family. Even Noah frequently asks to go the the "french place" his favorite, scrambled eggs with baguette and peanut butter....mine, two eggs, basted soft, with bacon and buttered baguette, Fredo usually gets an omlette, the Espagnol, "just how they make them in France" my dad always says, "a little bit runny". When not ordering breakfast....I have also had the Fromton Sandwich, amazing! Oozing brie cheese, with warmed pears and walnuts, their french fries are the best! The Chicken Caesar Sandwich, amazing as well, along with the Ratatouille Sandwich and the homemade soups!

You are always greeted with a "Bonjour!" and seen out with a "Merci!". A local family owns this place, which always is a bonus, you can tell love goes into this place and its food, and what I love is you are remembered as a customer, I enjoy familar faces.

A must try, 4016 Hastings Street, Burnaby, BC 604-299-1141

Au revoir!

Do you see what I see??

Noah has become infatuated with scissors...so while at my parents for dinner the other night, my mom let him cut away...I decided to join in, I wanted to make a snowflake! It was a poor attempt on my part, this is what I got...

Right as I unfolded the paper, a character came to mind, I wondered if Noah would be on the same page...I asked him, "who does this look like to you?" he stared, I knew he was thinking, "does it look like anyone from Ni Hao Kai Lan?" (a kids show on Nickelodeon Jr.) not two seconds later he shouted, "RINTOO!" I never thought he would get it, but he did!

I wasn't so good at cutting snowflakes, but I sure did a good job of creating Rintoo!

Snow Queen

This is my mom, she still has this same exact smile today.....she is having her picture taken after being crowned Snow Queen, in 1970, she was 18 years old! I totally know why my dad fell in love with her.....gosh she is beautiful. She seems so comfortable in front of the camera...must have been something about the 70's, she isn't like that today! In fact she hates having her picture taken...

I wonder if her voice sounded the same back then? How she acted? What her and my dad were like together? They were high school sweethearts, I would have loved to see them together.

I love to look at this picture, so I wanted to share.

Where the Wild Things Are...

Apparently they are in my potato and onion bin! I was making dinner the other night and needed an onion, this is what I found.....

I laughed, because I had just spent $45 on a breathable bin from TupperWare that is supposed to keep them from doing this! I have never had luck with keeping onions and potatoes....it's just not my thing I guess??

I must say though, that this onion looks pretty neat!

Under the Sea, by baby turns 3!!

Three years ago, at 5:09 am, Noah Gordon Vincenzo Valente was welcomed into this world! We knew that our lives would forever be changed, but I don't think we knew quite the impact such a small person would make!

It honestly feels like he was just born, then I did something outrageous like, blink, and now he is 3 years old! Singing Happy Birthday to himself, reading his birthday cards (well pretending anyway!) and unwrapping his own presents! Welcoming his friends to his birthday party had to of been a favorite of mine :-)

I am so proud of what he has become, and to see how much character this little being has! He makes me laugh, cry, curse and smile (usually all in one day). He is smart, curious, gentle, loving and comical.

Mr. Noah, daddy and I are so grateful that you chose us to be your parents, you truly make our lives meaningful and more exciting day by day!!

Happy 3rd Birthday to my boy!

NOEL

I saved this little stag from the sale section at The Cross. I glued back his antler, and ever since, he has been my buddy in my kitchen, hanging above my mantra.....I adorned his neck with something special for the holidays...glittery Noel.

I found these signs at Welks on Main Street, after my sister gave me a tip on one she bought at a dollar store. After her birthday brunch at CRAVE I ran into Welks to see if they had them...they did, all kinds...from .99$ to 3.50$....

Check out Welks Discount Store 3511 Main Street, Vancouver, 604-873-3330 they have great finds!

a moment...

There are moments in our lives when happiness fills our hearts, and the joy is so overbearing, it makes us cry..since having children I have many of these moments. Each milestone in our child's life brings us a different sort of joy..when my kids were born, the amazing accomplishment of birth alone brought tears to my eyes, and just looking into the eyes of my future, I knew that I would need plenty of kleenex for along the way...

Yesterday I went to watch Noah skate. I watched as my husband dressed him in his hockey gear, smiling to myself, this was the cutest little hockey player ever! He was so happy and so excited to get on the ice!

As Fredo led him onto the ice, my little baby slowly made his way from me.............................since Anabelle was born, I feel like Noah has grown up with lightning speed. Preschool, swimming lessons, skating.....WOW, it seems like just yesterday I was recording him crawling!

Here, I had a moment, he is now a boy, not a baby, not a toddler, a boy, my boy, and I think that indeed, I will need a lot of kleenex for this journey called parenthood.

Here are a few pictures of Noah on the ice, sure, maybe he has a long way to go, but just to know he has the confidence to keep trying makes me smile.

paperwhites

Every year I tell myself I am going to plant paperwhites from the bulb....and every year I run out of time.....they are so pretty, and so simple. I thought they used to stink, this year, I seem to really enjoy the smell? I went out and bought one, and plunked it in my hobnail milk glass vase.

I did not know that they are also called Narcissus, I came across this on another blog while trying to find a pretty image;

Paperwhites or narcissus are named after the mythological character Narcissus. There a few different versions of the myth of Narcissus (some including the nymph Echo & a curse) but most end with the haughty handsome boy falling in love with his own reflection in a pond and staying there loving himself until the day he dies. (hence the term "narcissist.")

Next year, I have promised myself I will do a HUGE arrangement with stones and all, I love it when you can see the exposed bulb...natural.

four years

I can remember my wedding day like it was yesterday...especially the extreme feeling of nausea that took over my stomach thinking about everyone watching me walk down the aisle of a church (never thought I would get married in a church). Kind of like the day I was to play my first soccer game, then quit, about an hour before the game because I couldn't stomach everyone having their eyes on me. I remember those doors opening and just giving it, walking so brisk, almost running down what seemed like a never ending aisle...I could feel my heart beating in my moms arm as it linked with mine..but I did it, I got there, and it was okay (until the priest called me Crystal).

10 years had gone by, since Alfredo and I met in high school, when he finally decided to propose. I did not know this, but my ring awaited my finger in a jacket pocket that hung in MY BEDROOM for months! You see, he tagged on a week, every time I would talk about getting engaged......I was eager, it had been a long time. I thought he was joking, he wasn't. I learned after that he got the ring in October, he proposed in Las Vegas just after New Years Eve, making it January 1st 2006, pretty much three months after. I smile when I say, it was right after I said to him "I guess we aren't getting engaged this year...." HA!

We knew we wanted a winter wedding, Fredo hated the thought of sweating in a suit during the summer months..I hate being hot, so I agreed winter would be perfect. We landed on December 9th, 2006, and began to plan.

I can remember clear as day getting off the trolley and walking towards the front door of the Rocky Mountaineer Train Station.....the lights were dim, the candles flickered, I gasped at just how pretty it all looked....I was happy with my choice of a potted amaryllis on each table, and I loved all my lacey decoupaged tealite holders that I slaved over many summer nights...things weren't perfect but it was lovely that I knew everything was made by myself with help from family and friends....that made it the most special. I loved how my dress felt, I loved how the food tasted, how smooth the sambuca ran down my throat (a little too smooth), and how good it felt to kiss my HUSBAND! I was on top of the world, for this is what I had been waiting for for many years!

I don't think I have danced as much as I did that night, ever! I was a little wasted, but that was allowed right? I don't know when my shoes came off, but they did, and exposed were my bandaged toes, one on every single toe to be exact...thank god my dress was long enough for the lace to cover. I never even took a glance at the midnight buffet, and the only time I looked at the clock, it was around 3am.....it was a fabulous party!

Last Thursday was our four year anniversary. We have packed a lot into four years! We sat and enjoyed dinner together, it was nice, but we both agreed being out without the kids just isn't the same....for our kids are us, our life, what we got married for.

I remember how in love I was with Fredo on that drizzling day of December 9th, 2006, and just over four years later, I can honestly say I am still that much in love with him today, even though every day isn't roses and cupcakes, that's life, and we learn to love each other even more along the way...cheers, to many more years!

PS...my next blog post will be about how depressed I am after looking at myself in these pictures....

Homemade Eatmore Bars...

This recipe is just as easy as making rice krispie squares, you just need a few more ingredients...

Homemade Eatmore Bars

1/2 cup margarine
40 large marshmallows
8 squares of semi sweet chocolate (1 box has 8 squares)
2 cups salted peanuts
4 cups chow mein noodles (Farkay DRY Chines Chow Mein Noodles, they are almost orange in colour)

Melt butter and marshmallows together in large pot over medium heat until smooth.

Add chocolate squares, melt in with marshmallow mixture

Stir in the peanuts and noodles

Place into a WELL greased loaf pan

Chill in the fridge (like an hour or overnight)

After chilling, release from loaf pan (turn it upside down)

Slice into pieces, like your cutting bread, then cut them into smaller pieces

Store in a container in the fridge

Enjoy

harriet the hen or charlie the chicken?

At Festive Nest I bought myself a hen (or a chicken).....it was $4.00. I didn't know what I was going to do with it, so I thought I would add it to my collection of things that I love...it has been sitting on my cutting block, just waiting.......

While at the Antique Mall in Fort Langley last weekend, I found a few....they were asking $35 and up for this thing! I think I scored! Not by much, but I would rather have paid $4 than $34!

If you are ever out that way, and have some time, be sure to visit this Antique Mall, there is TONS of stuff hiding here, there and everywhere! http://villageantiques.shawwebspace.ca/

tissue paper snowflakes

While in Toronto, I went to a place called The Paper Place www.thepaperplace.ca in the window, they had these tissue paper snowflakes hanging, they looked so beautiful! Of course they were all sold out, but I was sure I could get something back here that was similar....the other day, while buying party supplies for Noah's birthday, I stumbled across these...

They were $2.99 for a pack of 5. I will be using them for the party this weekend, probably hanging from my crystal chandelier....I knew I would find them somewhere, am still on the hunt for bigger ones though!

Don't you just love snowflakes!?

some good cleaning...

My sister loves to clean, so she always has the best cleaning supplies....I was at her house not too long ago, and after her brisk cleaning of her kitchen, her whole place smelled amazing! She shared the name of her supply..

SAPADILLA Plant-Based Biodegradable and Earth Friendly Counter Cleanser in Rosemary Peppermint! This stuff smells unreal! Better yet it is made in Canada! Even better it is made over in North Vancouver!

Sapadilla Soap Company

It was on sale, so I decided to buy the dish soap as well. Love the packaging, and love how it looks beside my sink! The cleanser was on sale for $5.99 and the soap was $4.99. I wouldn't usually spend that on dish soap, but I thought for the holidays I would treat myself, it smells THAT good!!

I only know of it being at WholeFoods, and its on sale there now :-)

Charity Kris Kringle

My husband and I started this a few years ago after many unhappy receivers of unwanted presents at the Secret Santa party....we decided to switch things up a little bit!

This is our 4th year I think?? Alfredo and I host a night, during December, to get everyone together for a great cause. We ask that everyone brings a new unwrapped unisex toy, and non perishable items for the food bank. Every year we donate to a different charity. Last year was Crabtree Corner in the downtown east side, for single mothers and children. It was a great success, lots of toys for the kids to enjoy!

This year, Noah's preschool is hosting a family from the Christmas Bureau, they have two children ages 1 and 4, when the night is done, I will collect a few items to donate to this family in need, the rest will go to The Beat Cares, by 94.5 fm.

It feels good to support someone in need over the holidays. It warms my heart to know we may have made a child or two smile on Christmas :-)

A little secret...

We ladies are always in search of a great foundation. One that leaves our make-up looking fresh, clean, and untouched. I always ask my sister, make-up artist Erin Guenter, for advice on which one to buy...

Not too long ago, while in the aisle at the drugstore, I sent a text message to my sister. She responded with this:

L'oreal Infallible

Best foundation ever!! It truly makes your skin look "complete" and does not fade or rub off during the day! Holds your bronzer and blush really nicely, and keeps your make-up looking fresh. I would highly recommend this foundation to those who wear it!

It costs around $15.00, sometimes the drugstore will have it on sale. However this is a minimal cost for a great foundation, when some, who don't even do half the job are double, sometimes triple the cost!

If you wear foundation, I would suggest you try this one next! My only con about this foundation is the applicator. If gets clogged frequently, and then with you push down on the top, it can squirt in all directions! WATCH OUT!

Le Marche St. George...can't wait!

My sister told me about this new little place called Le Marche St. George www.marchestgeorge.com....I googled it, loved it, can't wait to visit....like my sister, I am looking forward to a coffee and a pane chocolat..and seeing some of the other goodies they have...

I learned that the owner is a very talented local ceramics artist that I know of through working at The Cross www.thecrossdesign.com. Janaki Larsen www.janakilarsen.com, (a piece of her pottery is on my Christmas wish list).

I wish I could say that I will visit this weekend, but unfortunately all my days are full! I will get there for sure next week. I can't wait to let you know how it is!
